Studying Finnish as a Second Language (S2) at Jyväskylä Upper Secondary School for Adults
The courses are for students who seek to enhance their Finnish language skills. The courses start from introductory courses and extend to the final phase of basic education for adults (CEFR levels A1–A2 and A2–B1). You can also study Finnish as a Second Language in general upper secondary education (CEFR levels B1–B2).

Introductory courses in basic education (CEFR level A1)
Introductory courses are for you if you have not studied Finnish earlier.
- 5 courses (po_As201 – po_As205)
- lessons on Tuesday and Thursday OR Monday and Wednesday
Intermediate courses in basic education (CEFR level A2)
Intermediate courses are for you if you know the basics of Finnish or have studied Finnish for about a year.
- 5 courses (po_s201 – po_s205)
- lessons on Monday and Wednesday
High school / Upper secondary courses (CEFR level B1)
These studies are for you if you have a good basic knowledge of Finnish or have studied Finnish for two years or longer.
- 7 courses/10 credits
- lessons on Monday and Wednesday
Information about courses
- Courses are taught in Finnish, but in basic education English can be used as an auxiliary language when needed.
- For a single fee of 95 € per school year you can study as many courses as you wish. You can also study English in basic education.
- Lessons twice a week either at 17.00–18.20 or at 18.40–20.00 at Sepänkatu 3, Jyväskylä.
- You can start your studies at the beginning of any of the five periods of the school year. Notice, however, that the courses start from the beginning only in the first period of the school year.
In the school year 2024–2025 the dates you can start your studies are:

- 9 December 2024
- 17 February 2025
- 9 April 2025
How to apply
Enrol as a student using an electronic form.
After you have been registered as a student at Jyväskylä Upper Secondary School for Adults, you will receive an e-mail or a text message from the Student Affairs Assistant where you get more information concerning your studies.
*** NB. The Finnish as a Second Language groups are full for the second period (all levels A1, A2, and B1). You can sign up for the waiting list, and if any spots become available, we will contact you. ***
